Theory program Modulea) Understanding your own bodyUnderstanding your own body is the first step towards kalari treatment. This includes the knowledge of the ‘tridoshas’, the 14 ‘nadis’ in a human body and the 107 ‘marma’ points. b) Tridosha ConceptAccording to Ayurveda, there are three ‘doshas’ which govern the phyisio-chemical and physiological activities of the body. They are- ‘Vata’ (from ether and air), ‘Pitta’ (from fire and an aspect of water), and ‘Kapha’ (from water and earth). The doshas or biological humors are the prime factor behind both health and disease. Hence, a clear understanding of these three doshas is required to heal oneself and the others. c) The 14 NadisIn Kalari massage, the therapist/ kalari master uses his hands and feet to massage the patient using medicated oils. He uses nadisuthra kriya to apply pressure with his fingers, thumb or toe. The knowledge of the nadis is a must to perform kalari massage. d) Use of Oils, herbs and pastes in marmaThere are different oils, pastes and herbs used only by kalari gurus. It is necessary to know about these herbs and oils for prescribing the medicine. 2.Practical programme Modulea) Marma therapyMarmas are energy points or the sacred points in the body, comparable to acupressure points. There are 107 Marmas which are associated to the nadis and charkas of yoga and can be used for balancing body and mind. Different ailments require specific massage techniques. The speed, the force, the number of strokes, the type of medicated oil used and the system of massage will vary depending on the patient's physical strength, age and ailment. It is not an exaggeration to say that using the techniques of Marma therapy, a timely touch, slap or a gentle blow on a marma point can save a dying man! Out of the 107 classical marmas, there are few marmas which would be helpful for improving flexibility, alertness and even treat sports related injuries. Only these points will be dealt with in this introductory course. b) An introduction to Kalari massageA combat situation demands an extremely agile, strong and supple body, which would instantly reflect the focused mind. The ancient martial artists(warriors) used kalari massage to tone their bodies and sharpen their reflexes. The basic techniques of kalari massage are included in this programme. We welcome all the movement artists, athletes and instructors for this workshop. 'Certificate of participation will be presented during the closing ceremony of the workshop’ Registration will be closed on 26th July 2008About Ranjan MullarattRanjan Mullaratt has undergone rigorous training in Kalaripayattu and kalari treatment for over 12 years as a student of the eminent master Sri. Balan Gurukkal, at P K B Kalari Sangam, Kerala. Now Ranjan Mullaratt is the artistic director of Kalari Academy of Performing Arts (KAPA), Bangalore. Although his training has been traditional, Ranjan has succeeded in subtly blending Kalaripayattu with classical and contemporary dance forms. These newly-evolved dance forms are a natural part of Kalari's evolution, from being a pure martial combat used to settle differences in battles to the death, to an art meant for self-expression and keeping fit. His expertise saw him being invited to France for the 'Festival Latitudes Vilette Lude De Sud' by the French Government as a part of a cultural exchange program. His various accomplishments include choreography of Kalari movements in Mr. M S Sathyu's play 'Smashana Kurukshetra' which involved integrating Kalari movements and techniques into classical dance forms like Bharathanatyam and Odissi. Ranjan has also had different opportunities to choreograph and model in films, add films and serials. In a heartfelt bid to dispel the shrouds of mystery surrounding Kalaripayattu and popularize the art form, Ranjan has hosted several programs, lectures & demonstrations and has produced, enacted in different documentaries.
